Plumming

In January of 2004, we planted a family plum tree begotten from Home Depot of all places. Our plum tree has produced a happy amount of dozen fruits in it's 4th year. Ever mindful of the monster plum tree, Clees has been diligently pruning every spring to keep it compact.

The four varieties purportedly grafted are shiro, satsuma, italian prune and some other mystery variety.

home grown plumShiro- these are the true prize of this tree. Frosty yellow with a heady perfume. I can only find conflicting data on the web:
"ripens mid-August and is partially self-fertile."
"Extra-sweet, medium-sized clingstone fruits with bright yellow skin and crisp yellow flesh. Ripens in late July and early Aug. Pollinate with Santa Rosa.
Plum trees are naturally small and bear heavily. Plant them 10-20 ft. apart and water well. Japanese plums are vigorous and need another Japanese plum to pollinate them. European plums do not need a pollinator. "

Snailing Along

From Saturday to Sunday nothing looks different. But then a week passes by and blooms have snuck up on you. Summer is like that.
