Orchardists always recommend letting your tree grow five years without letting them fruit. You can see I got quite greedy this year letting my small tree produce so much fruit. I may have a smaller or no crop next year.

Plumming
In January of 2004, we planted a family plum tree begotten from Home Depot of all places. Our plum tree has produced a happy amount of dozen fruits in it's 4th year. Ever mindful of the monster plum tree, Clees has been diligently pruning every spring to keep it compact.
The four varieties purportedly grafted are shiro, satsuma, italian prune and some other mystery variety.
Shiro- these are the true prize of this tree. Frosty yellow with a heady perfume. I can only find conflicting data on the web:
"ripens mid-August and is partially self-fertile."
"Extra-sweet, medium-sized clingstone fruits with bright yellow skin and crisp yellow flesh. Ripens in late July and early Aug. Pollinate with Santa Rosa.
Plum trees are naturally small and bear heavily. Plant them 10-20 ft. apart and water well. Japanese plums are vigorous and need another Japanese plum to pollinate them. European plums do not need a pollinator. "
Satsuma
Italian prune- Darkens black
A mystery variety, possibly Santa rosa maybe Beauty???

Berkeley Explorer
From NY Times,
"Mr. Schmitt, a 60-year-old explorer from Berkeley, Calif., had just landed on a newly revealed island 400 miles north of the Arctic Circle in eastern Greenland. It was a moment of triumph: he had discovered the island on an ocean voyage in September 2005. Now, a year later, he and a small expedition team had returned to spend a week climbing peaks, crossing treacherous glaciers and documenting animal and plant life."
