When to Tomato

C and I planted our first tomatos two weeks ago, being optimists. Despite the cold rainy spell this weekend, I'm happy to have them in the ground.

First few ripe tomatos

Sweet 100s Cold cold mornings have given my tomatos the wilt. One momotoro had to be ripped out entirely, others we've been vigilantly pruning away suspect leaves. The only star in our patch is a Sweet 100(definitely not heirloom but who cares). This monster is growing over 7 feet and over- definitely sweet and in the hundreds.

Normally I am all about the black heirlooms, black prince, black krim, black plum, but this year they are so very sad looking with gangly necks and so few blooms that I've warmed up to the Sweet 100 which my neighbor salvaged out of the dumpster. I am so looking forward to making tomato jam!

fava time

front house fava 09 All week we've been shucking fava beans. I have my beans from Peru a decade a go lovingly grown year after year. The seeds were a deep purple when I first started but some other fava dust must have wafted into my garden as I've started getting a strain of mottled purple fava beans.
